Travel Lust: Savannah, Georgia

There is something absolutely enchanting about the South. Whether it's the buttery accent, the good food or purely the Southern charm, it is some place I have dreamed of exploring and Savannah, Georgia would have to be one of my stops.

A short distance from the Atlantic coast, Savannah sits upon a river bearing the same name.
The city is brimming with charming squares in which to sit and soak up the Southern sun- there are over 20 in the Historic District.
I would love to see the ancient live oak trees draped in Spanish moss- how picturesque!
The homes here are so charming, they almost rot your teeth. I imagine you could find some very charming bed and breakfasts in which to stay.
A short distance from the city center is Tybee Island- can you imagine the wonderful seafood you could get here?
Of course I couldn't visit Savannah without heading to Paula Deen's restaurant, The Lady and Sons. And I can only imagine the plethora of amazing Southern eateries that I don't know about!
Savannah is a must do for me- have you been? Is it at charming as it looks?

I would also just adore to live in one of these old Southern manses (without slaves of any color), in Savannah or New Orleans, drinking mint juleps and fanning myself on my grilled-iron veranda, looking out over the Spanish moss-covered trees, hearing the chorus of cicadas and frogs (I assume there are cicadas?) and seeing the fireflies flicker on a languid, humid evening as the sun sets and right after an afternoon thunderstorm. God, that would be the life. And then moving into my antique, belle-epoque sitting room, gossiping with the locals about the juiciest goings-on. Once I tired of this, I would go to my wood-paneled library and begin writing in fountain pen and old paper (or even typewriter!) the great American novel which takes place in, you guessed it, Savannah or New Orleans. And then doing it again, everyday until I die. Maybe in retirement? Who knows. A boy can only dream...

Is this not Oak Alley outside New Orleans?

Looks like it is! Google is only so good- my bad! But it still has that southern charm I was looking for.

I've lived near Savannah all my life and even though I visit there often, the beauty never fades. I love the personality of the oak trees as they shelter the roads and the character of the old houses and cemeteries that reside there. The awkward, almost eerie ringing of the church bells still give me chills when I'm visiting. If you haven't seen Savannah, I definitely recommend it. Don't bother with paying the over expensive tour guides or anything like that, I would just walk around the city and enjoy the sites, you'll learn a whole lot just from that alone.

I hope at this point you have gotten to visit Savannah. It is the most beautiful town in which I hope to call home one day. As soon as we arrived, it immediately felt like home and that I had been away for far too long. As my husband and I walked the streets, I felt like he was "courting" me again with our arms looped and that we had a chaperone walking a few steps behind. I felt like I could feel the music seeping out of the old stone walls and brick streets. I felt the history that was all around me and would have been perfectly at peace to have sat down in front of the Old Cotton Exchange and stayed until old age took me. Maybe one day...

I have lived my whole life in Savannah and I love it here. I have been spoiled by the beauty of Savannah and can't imagine living anywhere else. We have tree lined streets everywhere, beautiful parks, big beautiful houses everywhere, and old historic charm every where. Savannh wass the first planed city in the US and the squares were in the original plan.
